Biography

Alia Derrick represents clients in a wide range of complex commercial litigation, regulatory, and labor and employment matters.

Commercial Litigation and Proceedings
Ms. Derrick has experience representing national, regional, mid-sized, and small businesses as well as individuals in arbitration and litigation at the trial and appellate levels involving aviation, contract, insurance, finance and banking, property, energy, oil and gas, media law (including Texas Public Information Act, defamation, and Anti-SLAPP statute suits), bankruptcy, and trademark matters.

Regulatory Representation
Ms. Derrick's regulatory experience includes representing regional and small businesses in high-stakes state and federal regulatory proceedings affecting electric utility and communications providers.

Labor and Employment
In the area of labor and employment, Ms. Derrick has advised and defended employers in litigation and administrative proceedings involving hiring, termination/severance, and Title VII employment discrimination matters.

Judicial and Other Experience
Prior to joining Jackson Walker, Ms. Derrick served as a law clerk to the Honorable Justice Scott A. Brister of the Supreme Court of Texas where Ms. Derrick was also an Oral Argument Court Marshall. During that time, Ms. Derrick honed her legal research, writing, and analytical skills by editing majority, dissenting, concurring and per curium opinions; preparing oral argument memoranda; analyzing common law, statutes and regulations; and preparing memoranda analyzing lower court opinions and arguments of petitioners, respondents, and amicus curiae.

While in law school, Ms. Derrick worked as the Legal Clerk for the Austin Independent School District ("AISD") where she assisted the general counsel on various legal matters including contract, employment, real estate transactional, construction, school, and local/state government law, regulations, and policy.

Organization Membership

Ms. Derrick was appointed to serve as a 2011-2012 committee member of the State Bar of Texas' Lawyer Assistance Program, is a 2011-2012 Associate Member of the Patrick E. Higginbotham American Inn of Court, and is a member of the American Bar Association. Ms. Derrick was named a 2011 Dallas Bar Foundation Life Fellow and serves as the Co-Chair of the J.L. Turner Legal Association Community Involvement Committee (2009-Present), the Co-Chair of the Dallas Bar Association's Law in the Schools Committee (2011), and is an active member of the Urban League of Greater Dallas Young Professionals. In 2010, Ms. Derrick was accepted to the State Bar of Texas' "LeadershipSBOT" Class 2010-2011. In addition, Ms. Derrick co-chairs the Rice University MVP Centennial Reunion Committee and serves as a Rice Alumni Volunteer Admissions Interviewer.

Community Involvement

Ms. Derrick is dedicated to the local community where she spends many hours volunteering for various organizations and causes. Ms. Derrick assists with client intake at the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program Legal Clinics, handles pro bono cases, and volunteers at the Dallas Bar Association's LegalLines. Ms. Derrick mentors teenage girls in "Young Women on the Move," an organization she helped found, teaches teens about their Fourth Amendment Rights, and has served as a big sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. In 2009, Ms. Derrick served as a member of the Dallas Women's Foundation Grant Committee.

Ms. Derrick co-authored:
  • "Targeted Advertising: Tracking Online Activity and the Privacy Debate" with Kathleen LaValle which was later presented at the 2009 Texas State Bar Public Utility Law Section Seminar.
