Biography

Lawrence A. Waks represents a broad range of domestic and international clients in the entertainment, media, publishing, advertising, communication, high tech, biotech, and energy industries. He has developed nationally recognized expertise in entertainment and media law, which includes representation of record labels, movie studios, television production companies, electronic game companies, publishers and artists.

During his over 30 years of practice, Mr. Waks has played an instrumental role in Austin's emergence as the "Live Music Capital of the World" and in Texas' status as a "Third Coast" destination for film and television production. As counsel for the University of Texas Film Institute and Burnt Orange Films, Larry established a first-of-its-kind public/private partnership to create and support a university-based commercial film production company.

Mr. Waks also represents clients' interests in the area of international business and trade. His experience includes international contract and dispute negotiation, licenses, joint ventures, and distribution agreements, and arbitration. Mr. Waks is particularly familiar with the financial and business markets of South America, where he lived for several years.

In his litigation practice, Mr. Waks has successfully represented clients in cases involving rights to intellectual property, including anticounterfeiting, trade secrets, patents, copyright and trademark disputes; as well as disputes over licensing, publishing and distribution rights. Mr. Waks has substantial experience representing clients in the computer gaming, software and hardware, and publishing business and has developed an in-depth knowledge of all issues related to those businesses

Mr. Waks is also a Proctor in Admiralty with trial and arbitration experience in all aspects of maritime law both in the United States and internationally. His expertise includes claims related to the Jones Act and Death on the High Seas Act (DOHSA), maritime liens, oil spills, cargo shortage claims, demurrage and cargo contamination issues. Mr. Waks has also assisted clients in setting up maritime operations, including negotiating ship financing, equipment and facility leases, charters, and customs matters.

Mr. Waks is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. In 2011, Mr. Waks was named Chair of Litigation Division and Member of Governing Committee of ABA Forum on Entertainment and Sports Industries.

Mr. Waks is on the Advisory Council of the Paramount State Theatre.
