THE PURPOSE: We help our clients — from Fortune 500 companies to emerging businesses to universities to individuals — obtain, protect, and enforce their intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad. Whether that means enforcing patent rights and other rights or defending our clients in litigation and arbitration, securing patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, or advising on possible infringement, validity, or enforceability issues, we have the experience and the expertise to do the job right.

Our litigation attorneys specialize in enforcing and defending clients' intellectual property rights both in and out of the courtroom. Though we have negotiated thousands of successful settlements, we approach every case with the recognition that it may very well be tried before a jury, and we prepare accordingly. We have enforced and defended all types of intellectual property matters in federal and state courts across the United States, from California to Virginia, and from Illinois to Texas.

We recognize the true value of intellectual property, and we help clients maximize that value by negotiating favorable licenses, advising on joint ventures, overseeing divestitures, and assisting with other transactions to bring our clients the greatest rewards.

To help our clients develop an overarching strategy for their intellectual property, we also conduct independent audits of intellectual property assets. This allows us to develop the most cost effective plans for commercializing intellectual property, to guide research and development efforts to focus on core competencies and technology, to maximize return on investment, and to minimize unwanted, unproductive legal disputes.

THE PEOPLE: Our Intellectual Property group includes nearly 40 attorneys and scientific consultants working in five cities. Several of our IP professionals hold degrees in engineering or applied science and are licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and Canadian Patent Office. This technical expertise is balanced with considerable litigation and business experience.

THE EXPERIENCE: We have represented a range of clients — from Pabst Brewing Company to ExxonMobil to The New York Times to Nokia Corp. to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange — in matters involving copyrights, trademarks, fair use, trade secrets, and patents. We have worked with universities, the U.S. government, Fortune 500 companies, emerging companies, venture capitalists, and investors in licensing and other business transactions. We have counseled franchises and franchisees in industries as diverse as oil field equipment, software, restaurants, sporting goods, and medical equipment.

THE ANSWER: We create for our clients an A to Z strategy that protects and leverages their valuable intellectual property. Our reliable expertise and seasoned experience provide security, added value, and — perhaps most importantly — peace of mind.
