Collaboration

At Jackson Walker, we routinely collaborate with each other and our clients to determine the best course of action and to provide the most effective and cost-efficient solutions. Whether focusing on single-party agreements or large, complex multi-nation transactions, the combined knowledge of our group members provides our clients with an exceptional one-stop shop for their international legal issues.

Export/Import/Trade
Our attorneys regularly provide counseling and assistance regarding issues associated with exportation, importation and trade. We have attorneys who are licensed custom brokers and others who concentrate entirely in export classification and regulation. Our team has participated in drafting free trade agreements (including agreements made in the Americas and those with Asia and Europe). We also have experience in complex export classification areas, including encryption technology and deemed exports and have assisted numerous entities with regard to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). We also have experience with WTO issues, the World Customs Organization and Investment Treaties.

Immigration/Labor Issues
Jackson Walker has attorneys with tremendous experience in all facets of the permanent residence process, which ranges from labor certifications and recruitment campaigns to immigrant petitions, national interest waivers and applications to adjust to permanent resident status. In addition, we assist companies in compliance with the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) by reviewing hiring policies, assisting with corporate compliance, dealing with employer sanctions, conducting on-site audits and teaching our clients' staff to properly execute and maintain employment verification forms. Jackson Walker also has become a go-to firm for investment visa applications.

Logistics/Transportation
We have a team of attorneys well-versed and seasoned in the issues related to international transportation and logistic requirements. We understand the issues related to supply chain and intercompany agreements between subsidiaries and the protection of matters with regard to transportation across borders. We have experience representing both motor carriers and shippers in cargo loss and damage claims for goods moving by land, sea and air. We also have experience in dealing with risk of loss and other security matters, as well as insurance and commodity matters.

Intellectual Property
Jackson Walker has assembled an experienced group of attorneys to help clients obtain, protect and enforce intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad, as well as maximize intellectual property through various business transactions. We regularly counsel clients with regard to patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets; practice before government agencies to secure those rights; render patentability and patent, trademark and copyright infringement opinions; and handle enforcement issues.

Tax
The Jackson Walker Tax Practice group provides a full range of services to U.S. and foreign clients in all areas of federal, state, local and international taxation matters, including issues dealing with corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, joint ventures and real estate investments. Our services cover matters involving franchise taxes, sales and use taxes, tax treaty applications, estate and probate taxes, employee benefit and executive compensation plans, IRS audits and tax litigation matters. Our clients encompass a broad spectrum of taxpayers, including public and private companies, nonprofit organizations, employer benefit trusts and individual taxpayers. Members of the Tax Practice Group regularly assist clients with a wide variety of complex international transactions.

Knowledge

Working on complex international transactions requires a highly skilled and knowledgeable practitioner – someone with a depth of knowledge that far surpasses the ability to speak a particular foreign language. At Jackson Walker, our international group includes several attorneys who are foreign nationals or have foreign citizenship, have served as senior executives in companies outside the United States or have been legal counsel to companies with many international locations. The knowledge gained through these experiences offers clients seasoned attorneys who are culturally immersed and who completely appreciate the business practices and methods unique to that country.
