Biography

John M. Stephenson represents clients engaged in cross-border business and finance, and has broad experience in international energy, secured financings, letters of credit, real estate, organization and operation of partnerships, corporate finance, structuring and documenting distribution arrangements and the acquisition and disposition of companies. Mr. Stephenson's practice also includes analyzing and implementing foreign investment vehicles and strategies, structuring and negotiating documentation for joint ventures, licensing arrangements and limited partnerships. He has been involved in energy projects and financings in the UK Sector of the North Sea, the Dutch sector of the North Sea, the Yemen Arab Republic, Egypt, Bahrain, Guyana, Colombia, Indonesia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and Laos.
In addition to representing non-US investors in investment and distribution arrangements in the United States, Mr. Stephenson has represented clients investing in or trading with South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, China, England, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico (including NAFTA related matters), Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, Korea, Panama, the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Russia, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

Mr. Stephenson is a member of the American Society of International Law. He is a member of the Texas Bar Association (Sections on Corporation and Business Law, International Law {past Chair of the Section}, and Real Estate), and the International Bar Association (Sections of Energy and Natural Resources and Business Law {Banking and Business Organizations Committees}).
Mr. Stephenson was the Chairman and President of the United States - Mexico Law Institute, Inc., a New Mexico not-for-profit corporation that, for 15 years, produced programs and a law journal related to legal issues involving Mexico and the United States. He has been a member of the Bi-National Board of Directors of the United States - Mexico Chamber of Commerce and is a past President of the Southwest Chapter of the Chamber, based in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Stephenson is a past trustee of the International Bar Association Foundation, Inc. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the International and Comparative Law Center of The Center for American and International Law.
