Jackson Walker Gets an “A” in Austin Law Firm Diversity Report Card

June 27, 2015 | Spotlight

For the third consecutive year, Jackson Walker was among a select group of law firms that received an “A” grade for their exceptional minority recruitment, hiring, and retention efforts in the Austin Law Firm Diversity Report Card.

“This ranking reflects Jackson Walker’s deep commitment to diversity, which is demonstrated in our targeted efforts to recruit, retain, and advance a diverse workforce,” said partner Chris Mugica, who heads the firm’s Austin litigation section and is on the firm’s recruiting committee. Mr. Mugica is also a 2013 Fellow of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Fellow and the 2013-14 co-chair for the State Bar of Texas Minority Counsel Program.

“We have found that this strategy is not only good for us, but good for our clients, who have come to expect the attorneys who represent them to reflect the diversity of the community as a whole,” Mr. Mugica added.

The report card is issued annually by the Hispanic Bar Association of Austin, the Austin Black Lawyers Association, the Austin Asian American Bar Association, the South Asian Bar Association of Austin, and the Austin LGBT Bar Association. This year’s survey evaluated and provided a grade for the 26 largest law firms in Austin based on the percentage of minority attorneys in each firm as well as the percentage of minority partners in each firm, recognizing those firms that have done particularly well in retaining and promoting minority attorneys to partnership level.

Only eight of the 21 firms that responded received an “A” grade on the report card. Of those eight firms, Jackson Walker is listed as having the most minority attorneys and the most minority partners. The report reflects that in addition to being the largest firm in the city, Jackson Walker’s Austin office is one of the most diverse.
