Jackson Walker Prepares for Changes Under the New Administration

Trump’s election reverberated through the business sector worldwide, leaving many companies, domestic and abroad, wondering what might be next. While the energy sector anticipates new opportunities for development, the healthcare industry is bracing for what the new healthcare reform might look like. Financial institutions may welcome some of Trump’s promised deregulation, but the short-term effect of uncertainty will carry its own challenges.

Texas Lawyer interviewed the managing partners of a number of Texas firms about what this means for the Texas legal market. Jackson Walker’s Managing Partner Wade Cooper points out that clients will need advice about the changes. “The objective is to come up to speed pretty quickly as to what could be a pretty broad range of executive orders and regulatory changes,” Cooper said.

Jackson Walker is particularly well suited to adjust to changes and anticipate their effects in the areas most likely to be significantly impacted by the Trump presidency and Republican control of the House and Senate. With more than 100 years as a leader in energy law, companies worldwide have selected Jackson Walker to see them through complex legal matters involving the energy and natural resources industry and related service and supply sectors. The firm boasts one of the largest healthcare groups in the state, providing clients with experience in healthcare law, as well as the other areas that regularly impact healthcare entities. Likewise, the finance practice group, with attorneys focuses on all areas of finance, has the skill, experience, and manpower to gear up quickly for the financial sector deregulation promised by Trump.

Texas business markets in particular are apprehensive about the effects of Trump’s plans to renegotiate NAFTA and to crack down on unlawful immigration. “In Texas, our relationship with our friends in Mexico is very important to us. Our firm has a number of clients … doing business from Mexico and doing business in Mexico. We are concerned about the direction of our relationship,” Cooper said. The value of the peso has already fallen significantly and some Mexican officials are threatening a trade war, while others remain confident that Trump’s NAFTA threats were mere campaign rhetoric.

Whatever the future holds, Jackson Walker attorneys will be ready to see their clients through the changes ahead.
