Matthew G. Thompson
BiographyMatthew G. Thompson concentrates his practice on advanced U.S. immigration and nationality law and global business immigration matters, assisting employers with immigration challenges facing international workforces. He has extensive experience in all areas of U.S. immigration law, but primarily focuses his current practice on employment-based immigration for corporate clients, naturalization, and the immigration practices and regulations for foreign employment offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf. Mr. Thompson advises companies on strategies for both nonimmigrant and permanent residency issues, including but not limited to, L-1, H-1B, TN, O-1 and E-3 visa petitions and, Multinational Manager, Extraordinary Ability and Exceptional Ability petitions, National Interest Waivers and Outstanding Researcher immigrant petitions. Mr. Thompson has expertise in managing PERM campaigns for employers and in developing cost-effective strategies for companies and organizations interested in hiring professional foreign workers. He has experience in performing I-9 and Public Access File audits. Mr. Thompson has also developed a Deemed Export/Export Compliance practice, including deemed export licensing and compliance counseling associated with the hiring and deployment of foreign employees in situations that may require export licensure. His clients include both large multinational corporations and regional companies in various industries, as well as smaller companies, individual clients and artistic groups.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Thompson served in the United States Air Force as a Russian language translator. He also spent time as an Immigration Specialist in refugee resettlement at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. While there, he corresponded with, and informed, Congressional and White House officials on related refugee matters as well as being awarded the Department of State Superior Honor Award for outstanding performance during the attempted Soviet coup of August 1991.
Mr. Thompson is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Houston Bar Association (International Law Section). As a member of American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistant Program, he provides pro bono representation to U.S. military members with a variety of immigration-related issues. Mr. Thompson has also previously served as a member and investigator with the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Thompson is on the Bach Society's board of directors. He also counsels the organization on immigration matters for their guest performers. He is similarly a volunteer for Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts.
Mr. Thompson was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America under Immigration Law (2010 - 2013) and was also named a "Rising Star" by Thomson Reuters (2005).
