Biography

Christopher A. Thompson's litigation practice focuses primarily on insurance matters, complex business and contract litigation, and class action cases. During his 14-year career at Jackson Walker, Mr. Thompson has successfully represented both insurers and policyholders in connection with insurance polices covering:

• General liability
• Excess/umbrella liability
• Directors and officers liability
• Credit/life/disability
• Residential and commercial property (first party and liability)
• Personal and business automobile (first party and liability)
• Business interruption and contingent business interruption
• Professional malpractice
• Aviation (first party and liability)
• Marine (first party and liability)
• Numerous other specialty lines policies (e.g. lender liability, "GAP" insurance, elder care benefits, and many more)

Mr. Thompson's insurance practice has involved counseling clients concerning acquisition of appropriate insurance coverage, advising clients concerning potential coverage under policies both before and after a loss or accident, preparing and responding to reservations of rights letters, negotiating and litigating coverage issues, and defending or prosecuting good faith and fair dealing litigation. Mr. Thompson's accomplishments for insurer and policyholder clients include:

• Avoided litigation by credit/life/disability policyholders by responding demand letters and maintaining no-coverage positions on claims
• Obtained dismissal of claims against client without any payment in connection with industry-wide litigation relating to worker's compensation risk pool
• Secured insurance coverage for dozens of policyholders under first party and liability policies despite presence of facts that could trigger exclusions and/or result in a no coverage position taken by insurers
• Succeeded on summary judgment motion that resulted in take nothing judgment on claims asserted against aviation insurer but preserved insurer's counter-claim based on prosecution of frivolous litigation in action involving total loss to an aircraft where insured lacked insurable interest
• Obtained take nothing summary judgment in favor of insurer involving bad faith and coverage claim brought by former employee of insured while maintaining counterclaims for investigation and defense costs against plaintiff
• Successfully resolved putative nationwide class action litigation against insurer involving homeowner's insurance policies without certification of class
• Counseled clients in connection with acquisitions and sales of businesses about insurance coverage in place and potential need for additional types of coverage
• Counseled client on potential coverage issues involving contingent business interruption insurance claims involving natural disasters outside coverage territory

Mr. Thompson has also represented both businesses and individuals in connection with pre-litigation disputes and complex litigation matters involving:

• Class action litigation
• Fiduciary liability for officers, directors, partners, attorneys, and other professionals
• Worker's compensation regulation and practices litigation
• Commercial contract disputes
• Premises liability
• Fraudulent transfer actions
• Toxic tort and personal injury claims
• Federal and state securities actions
• Constitutional challenges to state statutes
• Collection and bankruptcy matters
• Copyright protection and infringement disputes
• Land use litigation

Prior to embarking on his legal career, Mr. Thompson worked for Prudential Property & Casualty Insurance Company as a multi-lines claims adjustor, during which time he was responsible for making coverage determinations and claim valuations on property and casualty losses.

Organization Membership

Mr. Thompson is a member of the Tort and Insurance Section of the Dallas Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas. He is also a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the Dallas Bar Foundation.

Community Involvement

Mr. Thompson has actively participated in numerous community events and has served in leadership positions in several organizations. He recently served as the Membership Chair for the Steering Committee of the Leadership Arts Alumni Association. Mr. Thompson also served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Dallas Arts District Alliance in 2008, and previously served as Chair-Elect and Programs Chair for that organization. Mr. Thompson has served as Volunteers Co-chair for the Helping Hands organization, which benefits the Family Place, a shelter for women and children. He was a member of the 2003-2004 Leadership Arts class in Dallas, Texas, where he served as Chair of the Steering Committee for the class fundraising project, which raised more than $40,000 for the Friends of Fair Park. Mr. Thompson was also a member of the Leadership Dallas class of 2006-2007 and is a member of the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association.
