• Texas born and raised more than a century ago, Jackson Walker continues to advance the world of business by helping companies of all sizes navigate today’s increasingly complex, interconnected legal landscape.

We’re a law firm that knows business. One where success is defined by our strong relationships and our deep experience. One where our confident yet approachable lawyers always have your back and are willing to do what’s needed to solve your most pressing problems.

    Committed to client service

At Jackson Walker, we don’t see our clients as interchangeable. We take the time to understand each client’s business goals, challenges, and opportunities, and we tailor our legal services to what works best for each.

That’s one reason why our clients are so loyal. One-third of our legal work comes from clients who have been with us for ten or more years. They keep coming back to us because they trust in the quality of our work and they appreciate our commitment to individualized client service.

    Delivering value

We provide our clients comprehensive services in a broad range of practice areas, and our reach extends around the globe. In fact, Jackson Walker attorneys have represented clients in more than 85 countries and territories, and we’re a founding member of Globalaw, a worldwide network of law firms with offices throughout the U.S. and in over 165 cities internationally.

But because we’ve chosen to keep our offices in Texas, we have lower overhead costs than just about every firm our size or larger. In fact, both PricewaterhouseCoopers and Citi Research have cited Jackson Walker as a Best Practice model in overhead cost structure compared to our peers. We pass that value along to our clients by keeping our rates competitive. Our cost structure also means we attract and retain top-notch talent, so our clients get the benefit of top-tier legal expertise without breaking their budgets.

    Providing expertise

It’s been said that great lawyers are made by great clients. We know our clients, we know their businesses, and we remind ourselves every day what a privilege it is to help them achieve their business goals. Taking on important legal work that demands the best we have to offer brings out the best in us, and that’s just the kind of challenge we relish. We also pride ourselves on being the kind of lawyers clients enjoy working with. In fact, Jackson Walker has always been and remains today a very collegial place. Our longtime unofficial motto is: “We take our work seriously, but not ourselves.”

At Jackson Walker, we believe that the service, value, and expertise we provide for our clients speak for themselves. And sometimes, our clients speak for us, as in these excerpts from clients’ reviews in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business:

“Jackson Walker lawyers are very efficient in how they perform and very attuned to the needs of the client.”

“They know me better than I know myself.”

“There was never a time they weren’t brilliantly prepared with every detail.”

“I would use no one else.”

    “They get great results.”

“First-rate service that was both strategic and cost effective…”

    “Truly interested in our business…”

“An excellent combination of expertise, professionalism, and results…”

  • Jackson Walker History

    Rooted in Texas

For more than 125 years, Jackson Walker has played a vital role in the growth and development of Texas business. Since our founding in 1887, our attorneys have represented some of the most influential companies in the state in key industries that shaped the course of Texas history, including railroads, the media, and oil and gas exploration. Today, we remain firmly rooted in Texas, while serving clients around the globe.

    Beginnings

The JW story begins with two brothers, John and George Robertson, who brought their legal expertise to Dallas in the late nineteenth century. In association with prominent Dallas attorney W.J.J. Smith, the Robertson brothers were instrumental in the formation of Dallas institutions including The Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas County Gas Company (later known as TXU), as well as railroads, insurance companies and other businesses in the city, which was just beginning to emerge as a commercial hub.

As the expanding railroad system spurred trade and population growth in Dallas, the firm grew as well. In 1930, Fort Worth attorney John L. Lancaster Jr. moved to Dallas to join the firm. His presence helped solidify the firm’s tradition of excellence in railroad law. Today, John Lancaster III carries on that tradition as a senior partner with the firm.

    Jackson and Walker

During the next few decades, the firm underwent a number of name changes as it expanded to meet the business needs of its clients. In 1948, tax expert Paul Jackson and his protégé Sam Winstead joined the firm. At about the same time, A.W. Walker, Jr., a professor at the University of Texas School of Law and noted authority on oil and gas, left teaching to join the firm as a name partner.

    Expanding growth

Over the past three decades, the firm has expanded to seven offices, joining forces along the way with notable firms such as Cohan, Simpson, Cowlishaw & Wulff in Dallas, Gresham, Davis, Gregory, Worthy and Moore in San Antonio, Small, Craig and Werkenthin in Austin, and Dotson & Scofield in Houston.

Our newest office opened in 2012, when David Folsom, former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, joined Jackson Walker. The decision to open an office in Texarkana was a natural one for a firm so immersed in intellectual property and patent litigation matters in the Eastern District of Texas.
