Jackson Walker partner Joe Magliolo participated in a panel discussion titled “The Past, Present, and Future of Criminal Law” at the 7th Annual Northern District of Texas Bench Bar Conference. The event took place on Friday, April 19, at the Westin Irving Convention Center Hotel.

Joe was joined by the Honorable Leigha Simonton (U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Texas), Gabrielle Vega (Assistant Federal Public Defender, Northern District of Texas), and Andrew Wirmani (Reese Marketos LLP). The discussion was moderated by the Honorable Hal R. Ray, Jr. (U.S. Magistrate Judge, Northern District of Texas).

The conference hosted numerous judges from the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Key topics on the conference agenda included developments in federal criminal law, the utilization of demonstratives, navigating high-stakes government matters, procedural complexities such as removal, bankruptcy trends and updates, and insights into the appellate process from trial to appeal, among others.

Meet Joe

Joe Magliolo is a trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor with extensive experience handling significant cases and investigations involving cybercrime, False Claims Act-based allegations, export-control and economic-sanction laws, and national security issues. In his practice, Joe advises businesses and individuals under criminal or civil investigation by the government and conducts internal investigations for public and private companies seeking an independent view into their most complex problems. He also represents clients in civil disputes at the pre-trial, trial, and appellate levels in state and federal court.

While at the Northern District of Texas, Joe was the Lead Computer Hacking and IP (CHIP) Attorney and prosecuted numerous high-profile cases involving violations of U.S. economic sanctions laws, cybercrime and dark-web-based crime, terrorism, wire and mail fraud, and money-laundering offenses. In addition, he held TS/SCI clearances, developed crisis-response plans for the district, and was named among a select number of AUSAs nationwide to serve on the Department of Justice’s Disruptive Technology Strike Force.
