Biography

Melissa Samano Ruiz is a litigation attorney focused on intellectual property and patent disputes. Registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and a patent holder herself, Melissa has seamlessly integrated her technical expertise with a robust legal foundation. Melissa understands the technical aspects of innovation and leverages her background to help clients navigate the complex issues in obtaining and protecting patents for computer/software, medical devices, and biotechnology.

Prior to practicing law, Melissa studied nanoparticle-cellular interactions for cancer research at the University of Texas at Austin and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors’ effects on cardiac function in mice at Baylor College of Medicine. Her studies continued at the University of Texas Laboratory for Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering, where she served as an undergraduate research assistant and later became a published author for her work on a stem cell hydrogel for wound healing. After obtaining her biomedical engineering degree from UT Austin, Melissa worked as a product development engineer at a stem cell company and a digital health technology startup in Austin, Texas. Her roles spanned FDA testing, regulatory approvals, manufacturing procedure design, and adept management of patent and trademark dockets across diverse sectors.

Her interest in patent and trademark applications led her to Baylor Law School, where she consistently earned the Dean’s Academic Excellence Award Scholarship. Melissa also gained hands-on experience as a patent agent for the Baylor Law Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Clinic and as a judicial intern for U.S. District Judge Alan D Albright of the Western District of Texas.

Today, Melissa draws on her experience to help clients with software patent litigation cases and other intellectual property disputes.
