As Marquette University Law School celebrates the 30th anniversary of the National Sports Law Institute, Nate St. Clair will return to his law school alma mater to moderate a panel discussion on collegiate athletics at a conference held on October 18, 2019.
Founded in 1989 as an affiliate of Marquette’s Sports Law program, the National Sports Law Institute (NSLI) provides a national forum for discussion and consideration of American and international sports issues and encourages input by persons and organizations with a wide range of viewpoints. In addition to sponsoring national conferences and symposia, the NSLI publishes thoughtful scholarship in the Marquette Sports Law Review, the first U.S. scholarly publication to focus on legal, ethical, and business issues related to professional and amateur athletics.
During the upcoming conference, themed “30 Years of Sports Law,” Nate will lead a discussion on important legal issues impacting collegiate athletics, as well as the current state and future of the NCAA. In addition, the conference will deliver an overview of the development of the law over the past 30 years within high school, college, professional, and international/Olympic sports, and will forecast future issues that will shape the legal landscape within sports.

Leading up to the conference, Nate said: “My hope is that young lawyers and law students will leave the panel discussion with new and enhanced insight on the variety of career opportunities in the sports and intellectual property law fields that they can potentially explore. Additionally, I look forward to highlighting many of the necessary changes that need to occur for the advancement of collegiate athletics for the next generation of athletes.”

Meet Nate
Nathaniel St. Clair, II is an intellectual property litigator and counselor. In his sports and entertainment practice, Nate has worked with and represented clients such as professional sports entities, fashion designers, record labels, recording artists, television and movie production studios, publishing houses, and authors. Prior to practicing law, Nate worked as a patent engineer/agent for GE Healthcare for several years and as a law clerk for the General Counsel and Vice President of the Milwaukee Bucks NBA Franchise. Nate has been recognized among D Magazine’s 2018 “Best Lawyers Under 40” and 2018-19 “Best Lawyers in Dallas” lists and Dallas Business Journal’s 2016 “40 Under 40” class.
He received his J.D. from Marquette University Law School, where he serves as a member of the Sports Law Alumni Association and the Diversity & Recruiting Committee.
