Kurt will serve on this committee for three years.

The Advisory Committee on Family Residential Centers plays a critical role in advising the Department of Homeland Security and ICE on matters concerning family residential centers for women and children fleeing from the failed states in Central America who are searching for asylum in the United States. Kurt will be working to make the Centers more humane residences for those who have escaped grave danger in their home countries, and have endured many trials to reach the safety of the U.S.

For 25 years, Kurt has handled complex commercial litigation matters for major companies in a wide range of industries in the areas of antitrust, deceptive trade practices, securities fraud, breach of warranty, product liability, business tort, and intellectual property; he also handles First Amendment and free speech matters. A significant part of his practice involves federal jurisdictional and procedural issues and the qualification or exclusion of experts. Kurt received his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from Amherst College in 1979. Kurt received a master’s degree from the Department of Politics at Princeton University in 1981, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow. He attended the University of Texas School of Law, where he received his J.D. degree, with honors, in 1990, and served as Executive Editor of the Texas Law Review. He was a law clerk to the Honorable Barefoot Sanders in 1990-1991.
